We have been designing a system that would allow us to grow mushrooms deep into the freezing Pittsburgh winter. How? Sophie calls it "winterizing with a radical edge"!
We are exploring how to heat with compost and how to insulate using mycellium (a root-like structure) as an inner-lining. Our mushroom specialist team has already begun collecting compost and building a prototype for our very green heating system and will be ready to test on Sunday. Stay tuned for updates from them!
We are inspired by the architect David Benjamin. We love the Hy-Fi PS1 building designed by David Benjamin built using mycellium bricks. Like Benjamin, we want to embody our environmental beliefs by using natural materials when possible (and we are just crazy about mushrooms!).
If you like mushrooms as much as us, you'll be into this TED talk on Mushrooms as the New Plastic.
